Planned Surgery Checklist: Tests, Insurance, Costs and Recovery

Before deciding

For planned (non-emergency) surgery, ask your surgeon about the procedure, alternatives, risks, expected recovery time and success rates. A second opinion is reasonable for major procedures.

Pre-operative tests

Common tests include blood tests, ECG and imaging, depending on your age and health. Share all your current medicines, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines, and any allergies.

Planned Surgery Checklist: Tests, Insurance, Costs and Recovery - key points

Insurance and costs

  • Ask the hospital for a written cost estimate and what it includes
  • Submit a pre-authorisation request to your insurer or TPA well before admission
  • Understand room rent limits, co-payments and non-payable items
  • Check scheme eligibility if you are covered by a government scheme

Admission and hospital stay

Carry ID, insurance card, reports, medicines and a list of emergency contacts. Follow fasting instructions exactly.

Discharge and recovery

Get a clear discharge summary, medicine list and follow-up date. Know the warning signs — fever, increasing pain, bleeding or wound discharge — that need an urgent call to the doctor. Plan help at home for the first days.
